Exclusive Interview
You started out as an actress, can you tell me a little bit about your journey?
Felicia: Yeah, I started out as an actress then moved to LA right after college, I went to the University of Texas. I came here to be an actress and after doing that for a few years, I got a little bored and decided to start writing stuff. That was when the internet was starting to do video and I wrote a show called “The Guild” and it became the first scripted web-series about a group of online gamers; that turned into a long process, I did that show for six years! Since then, I have been working on my own creative projects, including a memoir I wrote a couple years ago called “You’re Never Weird on the Internet (almost)” and this is my follow-up book “Embrace Your Weird!”
Can you tell us what "Embrace Your Weird" is about?
Felicia: Yes, it is a book designed to help people overcome the resistance we all tend to have when it comes to getting our voices out into the world. I hope it will help people re-discover who they are, figure out what they are drawn to creatively, and how we can try to incorporate that into our lives more. I made the book in a really interactive way, so not only does it have a lot of funny essays about procrastination and trying to examine your childhood to see what makes you weird, but it also has exercises throughout the book that you as the reader do, while your reading. I really wanted to try and make a book that imitated the way I make content which is very interactive.
Why should people go out and buy/read your book?
Felicia: I would say sometimes you need a little boost to get over some of the hard things in life and feel like your completely representing yourself. My book is designed to unlock those things inside of you that are just trying to crawl their way out. I think everyone has so much to offer but because they are inhibited, have procrastination problems, or are afraid of failing, they miss out. All the things I talk about in my book are to help encourage people to fly.
And what would you like your readers to take away from your book?
Felicia: Number one, the things that make you different are really the things that you should champion in your life, they are your superpower. There’s a lot of pressure to conform in today's world that are based on your looks, behavior, and even what you should be doing with your life; If you look at the great things in history, none of them came by conforming. All of the pressure that gets put on us to conform is actually keeping us from our full potential and that is what I would like readers to take away the most.
In addition to your book, you also have a podcast called "Voyage to the Stars" that is going on season 2, can you tell us a little bit about that?
Felicia: Of course! "Voyage to the Stars" is an improvised sci-fi comedy podcast, that is so fun! It has myself, Colton Dunn (Superstore), Janet Varney (Legend of Korra), and my friend Steve Berg who I was actually in "Doctor Horrible" with. We are four misfit people traveling through space that are on a mission to get back to earth and try to save humanity. Along the way we blow-up a lot of planets accidentally.
Are there any spoilers that you can give us for season 2 of your podcast?
Felicia: There are some hilarious guest stars this season. I have to say I laughed so hard, it’s really funny. As a performer, I have to say I really feel like we leveled-up this season and I am very excited for people to hear it!
So is there a form that you prefer? Do you enjoy being an actress or author more?
Felicia: You know, I have a very weird career that I love and would not give it up to just be one thing. I get to act and be on shows like
Supernatural and Mystery Science Theater, I get to act in shows that I create like "The Guild", and I also get to produce things like Table Top and Critical Role, as well as, a television show I am currently working on with Freeform right now. So I am the kind of person that doesn’t like wearing just one hat; I like to spread it out. However, I do enjoy writing because it seems to have a bigger impact. It’s more personal and seems to have that one on one kind of relationship with the reader. I also like changing peoples' lives and that is what this book is designed to do.
Do you have any other upcoming projects you would like to tell us about?
Felicia: Yeah, I do! I have a lot of upcoming acting and writing projects coming up that I can’t talk about right now.
So for now we will have to wait to find out whats next for Felicia Day. But for those of you who are ready to embrace your weird and unlock the power of self-expression, Felicia's book comes out on October 1st and will be available everywhere books are sold! In addition, season 2 of her podcast "Voyage to the Stars" premiered September 17th so make sure to check that out, as well!
