A Spectacle Worth the Wait: Wicked: The Movie is Pure Magic.
Like so many others, I’ve been enchanted by Wicked since childhood. The musical shaped my imagination, stayed with me through every stage of life, and even inspired my dog’s name—Elphie! So when whispers of a film adaptation first surfaced years ago, my heart soared, though tempered with the hope that it would do justice to something so deeply cherished. After a long and winding yellow brick road—filled with speculation, rumors, and anticipation—Wicked: The Movie is finally here, and it exceeds every expectation. It’s a breathtaking spectacle that was worth every moment of the wait.
Director Jon M. Chu hasn’t just brought the world of Oz to life—he has redefined what a movie musical can be. This film doesn’t just dazzle; it moves, it stirs, and it utterly enthralls. From the soaring opening notes of No One Mourns the Wicked to the final, heart-stopping moments, it’s evident that every frame was crafted with immense love and care.
At the heart of the film is an extraordinary cast, led by Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. Erivo’s performance is every bit as brilliant as expected—her Elphaba is fierce, vulnerable, and deeply human. Every note she sings is infused with raw emotion, making each song a transcendent experience. Meanwhile, Grande brings both sparkling charm and necessary depth to Glinda, perfectly balancing her bubbly exterior with genuine sincerity. Their chemistry crackles on screen, capturing the complexities of friendship and rivalry that lie at the core of Wicked. It’s thrilling to imagine how their dynamic will evolve in Wicked: Part Two.
What makes their portrayals even more special is how lived in they feel. You can sense the immense care Ariana and Cynthia took in making these roles their own while honoring their origins. Their performances feel fresh yet familiar—true to the beloved characters while infused with new energy.
Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero, while not as heavily featured in Part One, still makes a lasting impression. His effortless charisma is utterly swoon-worthy, but it’s his sincerity and depth that truly captivate. Dancing Through Life, one of the most reimagined songs in the film, has been given a funk-inspired twist that feels both modern and perfectly in sync with Wicked’s world. It’s a standout sequence that is pure joy to watch.
The supporting cast only adds to the magic. Ethan Slater’s Boq, Jeff Goldblum’s Wizard, and Michelle Yeoh’s Madame Morrible all bring fresh interpretations to their roles, setting the stage for even bigger moments in Part Two.
Musically, the film strikes a perfect balance between reverence and reinvention. The lush orchestration breathes new life into Stephen Schwartz’s beloved score, while the staging and cinematography elevate each song into a true cinematic experience. Popular and What Is This Feeling? sparkle with renewed vibrancy, and the freedom given to the cast to play with vocal riffs adds an exciting layer for longtime fans. (Defying Gravity riffs compilation, incoming!)
Beyond the performances and music, the film’s world-building is nothing short of spectacular. Every inch of Oz is brought to life with meticulous attention to detail—from the lush forests of Shiz University to the grandeur of the Emerald City. The Time Dragon Clock, the enigmatic "blobby men" (yes, the technical term!), and countless other Easter eggs make this adaptation feel like a love letter to devoted fans. It’s the kind of film you’ll want to watch again and again, just to soak in every detail.
This is the rare kind of movie that makes you want to shout about it—to grab everyone you know and say, "You have to see this!" Jon M. Chu and the entire team have created something truly magical, something that will fill longtime fans with nostalgia while dazzling new audiences.
For those of us who grew up with Wicked, this is more than just a movie—it’s a celebration, a dream realized. Even as I write this, I’m still tearing up from the experience. It’s perfect.
